Lead Payload Embedded Software Engineer
We are seeking a Lead Payload Embedded Software Engineer to join our aerospace engineering team. This role will interface product algorithms with physical hardware in a safe and performant way. The payload-embedded SWE ensures that processing hardware is compatible with business objectives and is capable of operating in a space flight environment. This position interfaces closely with and frequently mediates communications between the bus flight software team as well as the product algorithm teams coordinating system ICDs between them, and it is important to understand their roles.
Functionally, the position is highly multi-domain and touches many other areas of the engineering organization, including Electrical, RF, GNC, Optics, and Algorithms.
Responsibilities
- Lead development of payload-embedded software systems.
- Manage development progress and delegate embedded software tasks.
- Design hardware-level software interfaces between the payload systems, processing chains, and Bus Flight Software.
- Select and maintain the embedded operating system architecture for payload systems.
- Develop core control states and modes.
- Drive selection of processors and peripheral hardware to meet space flight demands.
- Provide help and guidance to neighboring teams on payload capabilities and other industry and architectural options.
- Ensure payload processor security, including maintaining software supply chain security.
- Set up a payload operating system with continuous integration build and test environments.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, related field, or equivalent
- 8+ years in embedded software development in C or C++
- 5+ years in space flight systems
- Strong interpersonal skills and an ability to prioritize tasking on your own.
- Strong experience with the GNU/Linux environment and a strong understanding of the GNU/Linux networking stack.
- Strong experience with embedded real-time operating systems, in particular experience with setting up Yocto and/or Petalinux build chains.
